“Here we are.” Mina gestured around the library at the tall shelves of books. “I’m not sure exactly what you’d like to know, but if you find somewhere to sit down, I’ll ask Ava to help bring in the books and maps that I was using before.”

The prince nodded absently, gazing around the room with a hungry, eager expression. She left him standing near the entrance and went further into the maze of bookshelves in search of Ava.

She nearly collided with the librarian as she rounded the corner of a shelf. Her friend was wearing a dingy work dress and a scarf over her hair, and holding a long feather duster in one hand. Ava quickly steadied her and then pulled her behind the bookcase, peeking around the edge at the two figures. “Who is that?” she hissed.

Mina looked over her friend’s shoulder, keeping her voice low. “The tall one is Prince Tamric of the Spring Court, and the one with the feathers is Avi. He catches birds and charms dragons, according to himself.”

“That’s Prince Tamric?”

“Yes. Is that surprising?” Mina wrinkled her forehead in confusion.

“Oh, it’s just…he’s so handsome. I mean, I suppose I should have expected it, given his brother, but he’s spent so much time locked away at school that most of us assumed that maybe there was something wrong with him.”

Mina ignored the strange flash of jealousy that her friend’s words caused. She gave Ava a pointed look. “The beautiful librarian who spends all of her time hiding away amongst the books believes those sorts of rumors?”

Ava gave an appreciative hum as she looked over the two men once more. “Not anymore. His friend is awfully cute, too. Why are they here?”

“To rescue me.” A snort of amusement accompanied the words. “Apparently Mother Dearest found them in the woods and told them some story about me being held captive by the evil wizard Sortarius and so they went dashing off to release me from his clutches.”

“It’s so heroic—like a story from a book or one of those operas they perform in the city.” Ava sighed dreamily.

“I didn’t know you were such a romantic.” Mina elbowed her gently in the ribs.

“Only when it comes to handsome men riding to the rescue.”

“I’m fairly certain they walked, and then Prince Tamric was dragged in by Monos.”

“Monos??” Ava’s attention turned away from the visitors and she gave Mina her full attention. “What happened?”

“It seems our suspicions were correct, and Mr. Dark and Devious actually was up to no good. He was working for my mother. He’s been trying to figure out how to take me back to her, and when I left this morning, he followed.” She shook her head, still unable to believe that it had been only that morning that she had been in that very room looking at an old map of the Forest. “He attacked and tried to abduct me.”

Ava shuddered. “I knew there was something off about him. How did you get away?”

“Avi showed up and then there was a dragon.
